Background
I had a professor a few semesters ago who was really into open-source software and Linux. We talked after class about Linux and general tech stuff, He showed me his website and explained how aspiring IT professionals should have one as a way to market themselves. This is been the second time I heard that from a professor so I put it in the back of my mind as something I should work on. Fast-forward a month or two and friend of mine who is an artist is talking about how she wants to start doing commissions, I tell her that she should probably start getting a website and her social media presence going. She’s not very tech savvy and didn’t have the money to pay somebody to build a website for her. Eventually I just asked if she would let me build it because I wanted to help her out and it would be a good excuse to learn WordPress. She agreed and so let the games begin.
I start watching videos and looking at examples, eventually I start to wonder how my supposed to learn and test things out without buying a hosting platform that has WordPress installed? I googled WordPress emulation and found local, a simple to use WordPress emulator that works on Linux! I made a post about it here. I’m still surprised to this day that people don’t mention it more in tutorial videos. Over the course of maybe 40 hours of both research and hands-on work I got a prototype together but, she wasn’t ready to host it anywhere quite yet. Over the next couple weeks I start working on my personal site and eventually bite the bullet and paid for a hosting platform. I start making post and really enjoying doing writeups for my projects. Since then I built a prototype site for a local business and I’m hoping we can close the deal and I can do this on the side.
