I made 2 posts yesterday going through my process to setup a janky DIY home security system using Frigate. Some people will say that I wasted at least a dozens of hours setting something up in an inferior way. Which I kind of agree with, but I don’t regret it I learned a lot about Docker and it got me thinking about what I would need to do In order configure something to be appliance grade for non-technical user.
Also just really enjoy writing. I wrote a note in the original posts I won’t be deleting them since I still think there’s some useful stuff in there and I’m not ashamed to admit that I made a mistake.
So what is the future going to look like? Keep in mind I have not installed anything so this is all based off of research. Home Assistant will handle the MQTT server and also has a add-on for Frigate. Home Assistant also will pretty much discover any device on the network which makes my setup Wizard completely obsolete. Funny enough I actually found this out by just googling something along the lines of “YAML generator script for Frigate”
In my defense I have zero experience with Home Assistant, I didn’t know anything about the add-on system and I’m not a huge fan of fancy lighting so I didn’t think it was for me. But it can do so much more and them excited to dive in. If I could have one take away from this it would be always look for a couple angles of attack and investigate them all a little bit before diving in. If I knew that Home Assistant could do more than just turn on a couple lights I would most likely have something up and running by now.
